A young couple's lives and loyalties are divided by the Berlin Wall.

When the East German government builds the wall in Berlin in 1961, Sabine Treppman wants to stay in the East to continue her studies, but her husband Peter wants to escape to the West. He persuades her to cross the closing border with him, but while she makes it across he does not. Sabine struggles to adjust to her life alone in the West as Peter's life in the communist East deteriorates. The only chance she sees to get her husband across the Iron Curtain is to enlist the help of an American GI, because they are allowed to cross the border without being searched. The dilemma unfolds when Sabine begins to fall in love with the young soldier.
